The Kingdom is a Party — Weekly Encouragement – August 23, 2020

Greetings Friend,

Several years ago I heard a sermon by Tony Campolo titled “The Kingdom of God is a Party.” (You can listen to it at this link – https://soundcloud.com/tonycampolo/the-kingdom-of-god-is-a-party — it’s worth your time!)

You probably know the story of the “Loving Father” in Luke 15:11-32 (most people call it the Prodigal Son). The Loving Father had two sons and one took his inheritance and squandered it. He returned home, planning to beg forgiveness, but the Father wasn’t concerned about what was past. He was just happy His son was home! “…the Father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found. And THEY BEGAN TO CELEBRATE.” (Luke 15:22-24)

You will remember the other son, who had been a “good boy” all his life, thought he was better than his wayward brother. He became angry and would not go in to the party. He basically said, “Dad, you OWE ME a party, not him!”

The Father replied, “But WE HAD TO CELEBRATE AND REJOICE, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.” (Luke 15:32)

Can you see it? The Loving Father was saying, “Son, the party is for us more than him. Quit looking at what he did and look and who he is. Of course we don’t celebrate his behavior, but he’s your brother; he’s My son, who has chosen Life now – I am full of joy for that! I have to celebrate!”

So, here’s the Encouragement: God is a happy God – and He is joyful over you! The Kingdom of God is a Party and you are invited. Whichever son you are, come in to the party for your Loving Father’s sake – you are His guest of Honor!

God bless,

Dave
